Why Live and Work in Vancouver, BC?

Vancouver, BC is located in the Pacific Northwest and ranked the second largest city in the region. It is the largest city in British Columbia.

Vancouver is consistently ranked one of the most livable cities in the world. According to a 2008 report by Mercer Human Resource Consulting, Vancouver has the fourth highest quality of living in the world.

Climate

For a Canadian city, Vancouver has fairly mild winters and little snow. Vancouver is one of Canada's warmest cities in the winter. In summer, the temperatures are comfortably warm and between June and August the temperature is around 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit).


Outdoor Activities

Vancouver was ranked as the 10th cleanest city in the world by Forbes Magazine. The spectacular natural environment of Vancouver includes: beaches, mountains and sea, clean air and water, are Vancouver's more than 200 diverse parks, including destination parks, small neighbourhood parks, woodlands and ravines, seawall walks and beaches, display gardens, botanical collections, and golf courses.

Vancouver Parks:

  • Stanley Park, one of the largest urban parks in the world, including 150 year old forest, 8.85 km of seawall, and many popular attractions.
  • Queen Elizabeth Park, including the dramatic Quarry Gardens and a large Arboretum, and a spectacular 360 degree view of Vancouver.
  • VanDusen Botanical Garden - a beautifully laid out garden containing thousands of rare, unusual and interesting plants.
  • Hastings Park, currently being redeveloped as a multi-use park, including a marsh sanctuary, Italian formal garden and a popular skateboard park.

Close to downtown Vancouver are three ski areas: Cypress Mountain, Grouse Mountain, and Mount Seymour. Mountain bikers, hikers, climbers and white-water rafters have access to world-renowned trails and rivers around Vancouver's outskirts.

The 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2010 Winter Paralympics will be held in Vancouver and nearby Whistler.

Arts and Culture

Food & Wine magazine has listed Vancouver as one of the of top-10 restaurant cities in the world, among cities such as New York, Paris and Tokyo.

Vancouver's population supports a rich diverse ethnic make-up. Newspapers, radio stations and television stations produce programs and news items in many languages including: French, Cantonese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Ukrainian, Farsi and Korean.

Prominent theatre companies in Vancouver include the Arts Club Theatre Company on Granville Island, the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company. In addition, Vancouver holds an annual Fringe Festival and International Film Festival.

Vancouver is the home to many world class museums and galleries. The Vancouver Art Gallery has a permanent collection of over 7,900 items valued at over $100 million and is the home of a significant number of works by Emily Carr. Other museums include: Vancouver Maritime Museum, and the H. R. MacMillan Space Centre. The Museum of Anthropology at UBC is a leading museum of Pacific Northwest Coast First Nations culture, and the Vancouver Museum is the largest civic museum in Canada. A more interactive museum is Science World.
